The crowning glory of the district of Kolhapur is the Ambabai (Mahalakshmi) Temple, where pilgrims in millions come every year to seek her blessings. The name of Kolhapur is also mentioned in Bhagavad Gita.

Devasthan Darshan

The Shri Mahalakshmi Temple of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, India, is one of the Shakti Peethas also called Dakshin Kashi, listed in various puranas of Hinduism. According to these writings, a shakti peetha is a place associated with Shakti, the goddess of power.

This temple is ensconced on a hill at a height of 3124 feet above sea level, 18 km to the north-west of Kolhapur city. Legend states that three gods took the form of Jyotiba to destroy the evil demon Ratnasur who was terrorizing the region. Jyotiba, the amalgamation of the souls (jyotis) of 3 deities- Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesha is believed to have helped goddess Mahalaxmi to liberate the region from the tyranny of Raktabhoj Rakshasa and Ratnasur the demon. Jyotiba founded his kingdom on this mountain.

The site has been named as Kumbhoj Bahubali in memory of this great saint. After the death of the saint Bahubali, many great spiritual Jain Munis have visited the place making this temple site more blessed for the devout followers of Jainism. This is a famous Jain pilgrimage centre and believed to be an Atishaya Kshetra-a place of miracles.

This temple is in four parts, all interconnected through vestibules. The first structure you enter through is the Swarga Mandap (Heavenly Hall). The architecture of Swarga mandap is unique. This mandap is round in shape and is constructed with the support of 48 well carved rounded stone pillars which are placed in three circles. Each of the 48 pillars has been carved in different shapes -round, square, hexagon and octagon.

Nrusinhawadi is famous pilgrimage place in Kolhapur district. Nrusinhawadi is a capital of Datta devotees. This religious place is situated on the sacred confluence of Krishna and Panchganga rivers at distance of 45Km from Kolhapur.

Swayambhu Paduka of Dattaguru are worshipped daily. The real third incarnation of Shri Dattaguru, Shri Nrusinha saraswati stayed in this area full of Oudumber trees for 12 years and he flourished this region.

The cave temple of Ramling is on the side of a rocky hill. The chief cave was originally nearly twelve feet square, but three quarters of it have been turned into a cistern five feet deep. At the inner end of the temple are a rock-carved ling and a Lord Ganesh from which water always trickles. Before they can reach the ling, worshippers have generally to pass through three or four feet of water. Outside the cave-mouth a massive Hemadpanti structure thirteen feet square rests on stone pillars.

An 85 ft tall Ganesha idol, made of cement concrete can be seen from NH4 i.e. Pune-Bangalore highway about 13 km away from Kolhapur, in Chinmaya Sandeepany Ashram. The whole structure consists of a 61 ft Ganapati seated on a 24 ft tall Meditation hall. The circular structure has a diameter of about 60 ft and weighs about 800 tonnes. 24 pillars support the Ganesha idol. Fifty skilled workers, specially called from Shimoga (Karnataka) toiled hard for about a year to complete the structure.

Temblai hill is a famous spot in Kolhapur. There is a temple of Goddess “Renukadevi” and other small temple on this Hill. She has graced the temple on a lofty hill to the east of Karveer. There was a tank named ‘Tarka Teertha’ near, which is available to some extent even now and is called ‘Takala’. The original Mandir is small and the idol is self-created. The idol has four hands and is of black stone.

Kolhapur Special

One of the major attractions of the town, the New Palace is a residence cum museum dedicated to the memories of ‘The Great Lokraja Shahuji Maharaj’. It is known for its architecture and grand interiors. The museum has weapons, clothes, and jewellery and is a great place to re-visit the past.

The Rankala Lake is a very famous tourist attraction for people from all over the world. Marked by the natural beauty and peaceful environment it provides, it sure does become one of the must-visits on everyone’s list. The lake was constructed by Shri Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, the then king of Kolhapur. The lake covers an area of as large as 107 hectares.

The Town Hall Museum is classified into seven precise sections, namely portraits, paintings, archaeological, sculpture, metal, weapons, and miscellaneous. In the museum, one can find two impressive 18th-century cannons, ivory and sandalwood made idols, dices, decorative pots, terracotta musical instruments dating back to 1888; and paintings of Kala Maharshi Baburao Painter.

A fantastic sculpture museum, the Kaneri Math or Siddhagiri Gramjivan Museum is one of Kolhapur’s important attractions. Nestled in the premises of Moola-Kaadsiddheswar Shiva temple, this place has an unmissable tranquil vibe. The highlight of this temple however is the way it displays village life or gramjivan. It depicts the history of the village before the Mughals invaded it. The sculptures here are life-size here sprawling across an area of seven acres.
